I must admit, learning about the country of Brunei has been fascinating and being able to visually explore the country through a variety of You Tube videos makes it that much more real. If it weren't for the fact that this muslim country is under Sahria Law, I would want to visit. Learning about the historic city on stilts,Kampong-ayer, nicknamed the Venice of the East, was also intriguing. I discovered a funny John Oliver video ( on a not so funny topic) about the Sultan of Brunei and the passing of the new penal code for Sharia Law. Have included this on the webpage. I also discovered two books to read related to this country and they just arrived today. The first is Some Girls: my Life in a Harem about a young american woman, Jullian Lauren, who spent 18 months in a harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. The second is Brunei (Cultures of the World) by Tamra Orr and the third is Stranger in the Forest: On Foot Across Borneo by Eric Hansen. I plan to read the first two books before going on to the next county. I would love to hear about anyone's direct experience with the Brunei or other resources to learn more about this country.

AuthorAn avid reader, I have spent most of my life learning about the world through the pages of many books. The more I read the more I want to learn about the countries that make up our world. So I have set out to explore a different country every week (or two) until I have figuratively made it around the globe. ArchivesCategories |
